Depending on their internship requirements and the available internship positions in our partner companies, prospective interns may work in any of the following (or other) disciplines during their internship with AIP:
- Business Law: This diverse law discipline covers every aspect of the law related to commerce and industry, such as trademarking, licensing, taxes, etc. Business law is further split into corporate law and small business law.
- Criminal Law: Criminal law is a system of law that has to do with crime and the punishment, as well as rehabilitation, of individuals who have committed a criminal act. This field of law proscribes conduct perceived as posing a threat to the health, safety, property, and moral welfare of individuals or groups.
- Constitutional Law: This aspect of law places its focus on defining the structure, roles, and powers of various entities within a state, such as the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. It also defines the basic rights of citizens and the relationships between different levels of government in federal countries.
- Intellectual Property (IP) Law: Lawyers in this field handle the acquisition and enforcement of trademarks, patents, and copyrights. They can choose to further specialize in one aspect, for example, patent law.
- Environmental Law: Environmental lawyers are tasked with promoting and enforcing laws and standards aimed at protecting the environment from abuse by individuals or corporations
An internship will give you a much closer look at the daily responsibilities associated with being a lawyer, and a much deeper understanding of the ins and outs of the law profession. And since law is a diverse field with many specializations, you will be able to determine a direction for your future career.
As a law intern in Asia, you will have ample opportunity to apply some of the concepts and principles you learned in law school to real life situations. For example, learning about civil procedure in class is one thing, but actually being involved in a law suit from start to finish while applying the civil procedures you learned is quite another. There’s nothing like practical, hands-on experience in the law profession.
When you have interned at a law firm and taken part in various legal tasks, writing your bar exam will also be much easier because you can reflect on your internship experience and then put it into words, rather than trying to remember what your textbook or class instructor said.
Regardless of the roles you get to play during your internship, observing how lawyers conduct themselves in and out of court, how they relate with their clients, fellow attorneys, judges and other court personnel will prepare you to conduct yourself professionally in similar settings in your future career.
Just like the legal services industry is comprised of many fields, the role of law in an economy is a broad topic that can hardly be discussed in a few sentences. Summarily, however, we can say that law is the glue that holds a nation together, or that it forms the framework upon which several aspects of the economy hinge, and without which there will be uncertainty, confusion, and even chaos. These, of course, are detrimental to any economy.
Business laws and regulations, for example, dictate the guidelines and boundaries by which businesses can operate. Without these guidelines and their enforcement, consumer interest will be left unprotected, and cases of exploitation will go unchecked.
In a nutshell, law brings certainty and order; and where there is order, there is also progress. No nation’s economy can possibly grow or develop in the absence of well-defined laws governing its different sectors.
