International trade is a diverse field. As an entrant into the field, an international import export internship with AIP will expose you to various sectors of the industry and the different job roles available to an import-export specialist.

After you have experienced some of these job roles and figured out your strengths and weaknesses, you will be much better informed to make decisions regarding the best professional route to take.

During your import export internship in Asia, you will gain valuable insights into emerging Asian markets and other major trade markets, as extensive market research and analysis will be a part of your training.

This is a big advantage for you because knowledge about global markets is a prerequisite for success in many disciplines within this industry.

A career in import-export is one that usually involves a lot of strategic decision-making. During your internship in this field, you will have the chance to take part in several real-life decision-making processes, which will help you understand what it takes to make important trading decisions.

Having a network of professional contacts is important for any import-export specialist. Besides skills, knowledge and experience, such a network will serve as strong leverage to your success in the field. Professional contacts can assist you in many ways; they can refer you to potential clients, facilitate your business in a particular market, and so on.

The Role of Import Export in an Economy

There are several notable ways international trade can impact an economy. For one, exports create employment, increases wages, and helps domestic businesses gain a competitive advantage. Exports also enhance economic output, as measured by gross domestic product. Because exports are a component of aggregate demand (AD), rising exports helps to increase AD, which, in turn, leads to higher economic growth.

On the other hand, introducing scarce resources, such as raw materials, into a local economy through import makes it possible for new products to be developed locally, which helps to develop and sustain that economy. For example, some countries import items/resources such as microchips, oil, and cocoa, and then use them to develop new and sustainable products or operate existing ones.

In general, international trade serves to level the economic playing field, especially for developing nations.

AIP Import Export Internship Scope Areas

Depending on their internship requirements and the available internship positions in our partner companies, prospective interns may work in any of the following (or other) disciplines during their import export internship with AIP:

  • International Business Development: This involves providing the required legal, financial and cultural insights and advice necessary for smooth trade relations between a supplier and a consumer country, by utilizing knowledge about the consumer country’s history, economy, laws, culture, business practices, and trade patterns.
  • International Financial Management: International finance deals with the identification and management of financial risks and returns resulting from international trade, financing, investment, and dividend decisions of firms. It differs from national financial management because of the imperfect markets, different currency exchange rates, and different political situations involved.
  • Export Risk Management: Is all about evaluating or assessing the different types of risk (such as political risk, currency exchange risk, transport risk, legal risk, credit risk, risks related to geographical and social issues, fraud, etc.) associated with exporting merchandise to particular foreign territories, and the measures are taken or the systems put in place to minimize these risks.
  • Freight Documentation Management: Has to do with the management of shipping notes, bills of lading, contracts, cargo manifests, receipts, export paperwork, and many other types of shipping documentation.
The Demand for Import Export Specialists Worldwide

Import and export is what the world thrives on. No country can be said to be self-sufficient. It is almost always the situation that a particular country will lack (or possess in insufficient quantities), a resource which another country has in abundance, and vice versa; hence, the need for international trade.

Because the transfer of goods across national borders is a complicated process that depends on the proper coordination of a lot of factors to be successful, the services of professionals in matters of international trade are always needed by governments, export companies, international or MNC banks, public sector houses, as well as other institutions and businesses that have something to do with foreign trade.

The good news is that the international trade industry is one that has been creating, and will continue to create, jobs that drive global trade activities; and so professionals, as well as experienced new entrants into the field who possess the requisite competencies, will continue to be in high demand.

The demand is even higher in some sectors of the industry, such as international finance management, market research analysis, and international business development.
