Overview

What the internship is about

Game interns join mobile studios, indie teams and outsourcing houses that build art and code for bigger publishers. Most start in QA or junior production: playing daily builds and writing bug reports in Jira, then moving on to small features in Unity or Unreal, level layouts or 3D props in Blender, depending on your skills. Asian studios often make games for global markets, so you also see how localization and live updates work.

A week follows the sprint: daily stand-up, a new build on Thursday, a playtest and notes on Friday. Japan, South Korea and Singapore have the most studios among our destinations.

Help write characters, dialogue and quest text that make gameplay more engaging. You learn how writing for games differs from other writing, with every line tied to what the player does.

Create game art and visuals

Work with artists on characters, environments and interface designs. You see how game art goes from concept to final asset.

Your role

Your role in Game Development

Code games in Unity or Unreal

Write code for gameplay, tools and user interfaces, often in engines like Unity or Unreal. You learn how a real game is built.

Help with game audio

FAQ

Your questions, answered

What will I do on a game development internship?

You'll join a game studio team and help with programming, level design, art or testing. Testers play builds, find bugs and log them so developers can fix them.

Do I need experience to get a game development internship?

No. Studios care more about what you can show than about your degree. A small game, a portfolio or a GitHub or itch.io page helps a lot.

What skills and tools will I use?

Common tools include Unity or Unreal Engine, C# or C++, Blender for 3D art and Jira for tracking bugs. You'll work in short team sprints, like most studios do.

Where can I do a game development internship?

Popular destinations for game development internships include Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Tell us where you'd like to go and we'll check what's possible.

Can I get university credit for my internship?

Yes, if your university accepts it: we provide the documents it needs (internship agreement, placement confirmation, supervisor evaluation and a host certificate of completion). Your university decides whether to give credit, and how much.

How much does it cost, and is it paid?

Programs start from $2,050 for 6 weeks on Explorer, depending on where you go. Most internships are unpaid.
