COVID-19 Health Protocols for Interns Abroad
In a time where the world is engulfed in a global pandemic, the safety measures and health protocols put in place by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) are vital to our protection. While countries may have additional regulations on how to contain the virus, there are standard procedures that should be followed by everyone, regardless of where you are in the world.
If you are completing an on-site internship in a foreign country, you have to abide by the rules stipulated below:
Before Travelling
Before travelling to a foreign country for an internship during this time, you are required to get the appropriate COVID testing (PCR, RT-PCR, etc.) from a recognized medical facility. If you have already received the vaccine, you will have to present a vaccine certificate, and in the near future, a vaccine passport.

This is to prove that you have been fully vaccinated by one of the verified vaccines like Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, J&J, Sputnik V or Sinovac.
During Travelling
When boarding the aeroplane and while travelling, make sure to follow all the instructions and requirements set forth by the airline. Wear your mask throughout the flight and sanitize your hands as often as possible.

Even if you are already vaccinated, it is advised that you adhere to the travel rules for your safety.
Arrival
Depending on where you land, you will need to quarantine in a designated location provided by the government and is usually paid for by the passenger. If you are fully vaccinated, you will not be required to quarantine. Once you are out of quarantine, you will have to observe certain safety policies set up by the government of that country.
Some of these include; wearing a mask in public, observing social distancing, washing your hands regularly and using alcohol on your hands and on the tools you frequently use. Before entering any building or shops, your temperature will also be checked and recorded.

The company or organization you will intern at may also have one specific safety regulation that you will be informed about. You will be required to follow all the safety precautions set by them along with the standard policies implemented by the government of that country.
Some countries have implemented curfews to prevent people from being outdoors too late and organizing large events. In this case, you will have to respect the curfews and ensure you are back to your residence on time or else you will have to either pay a fine or get detained for breaking the curfew.
Remote Internship
If travelling abroad for an internship does not seem appealing or is too risky at the moment, a remote internship is also offered by a number of companies and organizations. Universities and companies understand the importance of an internship before entering the working world.
That is why remote internships have been introduced. They are designed to help students and young professionals improve their skills and boost up their resume for future employment. While remote internships do take away from the hands-on experience that on-site internships are meant to provide, the skills learnt during a remote internship will be more beneficial for your future career.
With the way that the economy is changing and evolving due to the pandemic, the skills required by future employees will also change. Therefore, while a remote internship is still gaining traction, it may also be a safer option for an internship right now.
You will be able to learn all the skills needed for a future job from the safety of your own homes. Moreover, completing a remote internship can boost up your resume and make you look more appealing to future employers.
