Layout Test Post for Edits: THE BRIGHT SIDE OF BEING LAZY AT WORK

  • By
  • on 04 Dec 2018
relaxedlyingmanWould you believe me if I told you being lazy could make you more productive? Laziness is perceived negatively, so it’s not every day that people consider the actual benefits. People like to believe only hard work leads to success. In a perfect world that would be true. Unfortunately, we live in an imperfect world where working harder doesn’t necessarily mean getting more work done. Here are some ways to utilize laziness to benefit in the workplace:

YOU WORK HARDER WHEN YOU WORK SMARTER

workharderLazy people avoid work. Thanks to this, a clever lazy person will find a way to maximize output while minimizing input. They are willing to take the metaphorical road less traveled, not for the sake of adventure, but because they see a shortcut to their destination. Being efficient means less time working on a task, which means no staying overtime. Think like a slacker and find a way to get the work done in the shortest time with the maximum outcome.

“Hire a lazy person to do a difficult job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” - Bill Gates

If you don’t believe working less can make you more effective, you don’t have to take my word for it. Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto came up with the 80-20 rule, a highly celebrated time management technique. It suggests that just 20% of your efforts can deliver 80% of the results. So theoretically, only 20% of your time at work during the day is spent on the things that really matter. For more on applying Pareto’s principle to your life, read this article by What Is The 80/20 Rule And Why It Will Change Your Life by Yaro Starak.

IRONICALLY, SAVE TIME WITH PROCRASTINATION

checkingtimeThere’s no denying that a deadline is a good motivator for people to finish their work. If something doesn’t have a due date, it’s easy to push to the side and leave for later. When you know something needs to be done by a certain date, there is only so much procrastination you can get away with before the task has to be dealt with. Psychologically, the sense of urgency forces them to focus on what needs to be done without distractions. When you start a project early, you often do extra unnecessary work or waste time on something unimportant. Working closer to the deadline means there is no wasted effort and everything is done much more efficiently. Yet, this method has its shortcomings. Don’t underestimate the amount of time some tasks can take! It is generally not a good idea to work on something unfamiliar because it is harder to estimate how long you need. Not to mention, there will be times when life happens. Unexpected projects can come up and bog you down. An issue outside of work will distract you or force you to take time off. Also, keep in mind not everyone will be onboard with your method. So use it for individual projects as opposed to team projects. When working with others you need to give more leeway, because everyone works at different speeds and methods.

GET BUSY WITHOUT THE BUSY WORK

busyLazy people loathe busy work. Busy work only looks productive, but doesn’t actually produce anything useful. Unnecessary meetings with no clear agenda, unimportant tasks [] are all []. Any lazy person worth their salt looks to get their job and go. They avoid

LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD BY LETTING THE MACHINES DO IT

tech2croppedLife has been easier thanks to the advent of technology and its prevalence in our lives. Extra time and effort is saved thanks to machines. With a little effort and know-how, []. Automate part of your work. For example, if you are a social media manager, do you really need to open the browser and login every time you need to post something? Consider instead scheduling your posts ahead of time. The system, unlike you, is less likely to forget and will consistently publish your content punctually. You can always go back and edit your posts as well, as long as it’s still unpublished. The time you’ve saved can be spent [].

BOTTOM LINE SHOULD BE YOU GOT THE JOB DONE
